 Cole Gallery
 March 3, 2010 – June 3, 2010
 Location:  @class@

The most important ingredient to any great artwork is the ability of an artist to draw. Developing and improving your drawing skills will also help you become a better painter and/or sculptor. Anyone can learn to draw. To help you become a good drawing artist, art instructor and artist Joe Mac Kechnie will introduce you to proven drawing techniques in his five week workshop. This workshop will be using graphite, charcoal, Conte, ink and pastels. WEDNESDAYS 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm $35.00 per class DRAWING MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES You have probably heard it many times before; don't scrimp on the quality of your art materials. If you haven't yet created that masterpiece, you soon will. If it was done with inexpensive materials, it will be noticed. Also, using inexpensive materials may lead you to believe you can never produce an art piece that looks like the pros. Becoming discouraged is less likely when you do not have to overcome poor-quality materials. Also, exchange ideas with fellow artists. Find an artist whose style you would like to emulate. Ask what equipment they use and why. What is their philosophy and approach to painting? This may influence what equipment you want to use. Drawing Materials The underlying principle to any great artwork is the artist's ability to draw. Here are a few drawing materials I use: Erasers Kneaded eraser Gum eraser Hard white eraser Pencils #4B, 5B and 6B drawing pencils Razor blade and sandpaper Charcoals Soft charcoal pencils (General's is a good brand) Soft vine charcoal sticks Soft vine charcoal bricks Soft compressed charcoal bricks (by Char-Kole) White charcoal bricks Conte Crayon Sticks Sanguine Natural Bistre (brown) White Pastels Small set of hard pastels (Nu Pastel) Small set of soft pastels (any brand) Inks Permanent Inks and Pens: - Faber-Castell PITT Calligraphy Pen, 2.0mm Chisel Nib, Sepia and/or black - Higgins Fade proof Artist Drawing Ink Brown, 1oz Bottle - Higgins Waterproof Black India Ink, 1oz Bottle Water-Soluble Inks and Pens: - Speedball Elegant Writer 4-pen Calligraphy Set - Walnut Drawing Ink, 10oz Plastic Bottle - Professional Grade Black Sumi Ink, 2oz Paper Drawing paper (Biggie Sketch pad by Canson) Drawing sketchbook Pastel paper (Canson or Fabriano, grey tone. pads or single sheet) Misc Soft paper towels Mid size Sumi or watercolor round brush

 Location:  Adam Cave Fine Art

Click on the image above to see artwork LUMINOUS New oils on canvas by Jennifer O'Connell March 5 - April 20, 2010 Opening Reception: Friday, March 5th 6-9 pm COMFORTABLE AND COZY, O’CONNELL’S ROOMS BECKON Jennifer O’Connell’s intimate interiors, painted in lush oils on canvas, invite the viewer into scenes where a previous visitor seems to have only just left. Without hesitation, the artist is in control of these environments which will be on display in her solo exhibit, “Luminous”, opening at Adam Cave Fine Art on Friday, March 5th with a reception from six until nine p.m. Some of these canvases were recently seen at Barton College Art Gallery in Wilson, North Carolina where Jennifer O’Connell was selected for a solo exhibition of her work in the late fall of 2009. The gallery is sponsored by Barton Friends of Visual Arts and the show was designed by Gerard Lange. From bedrooms to living rooms, and daylight to lamplight, the paintings in this show glow with brilliant light and bright, mostly unsubtle pastel color. The rooms are full of characters; flowers and lamps, pillows and rugs, dressers and chairs, all typical of most homes, but these are infused with O’Connell’s special warmth and hospitality. The artist is not a graduate of Barton College, having earned her BFA at SUNY at Plattsburgh and an MFA degree in painting and drawing from the University of New Hampshire. She also studied at the University College Chester in England on a Giltz Family Travel Award. Her awards are numerous, including an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Fellowship, a Vermont Studio Center Artist Residency Grant and a Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Grant. Among her many national and international exhibits are Fraser Gallery in Washington, D.C. and the Bowery Gallery in New York. In 2008, this young artist was selected for the New England/New Talent exhibition at the Fitchburg Art Museum in Fitchburg, MA. Jennifer O’Connell will be the featured artist in the main gallery at Adam Cave Fine Art, 115 ½ Hargett Street, second floor until April 20th.

Exploring Watercolor Techniques with Joe Mac Kechnie
 Cole Gallery
 March 9, 2010 – May 11, 2010
 Location:  @class@

Joe will be exploring different ways to paint with watercolor so that the qualities of the media are enhanced. He will also introduce different ways of combining watercolor with other mediums which can lead to exciting discoveries as an artist. Joe will be looking at how watercolor and ink can be combined to create interesting effects and exciting paintings. TUESDAYS, March 16 through May 11, 2010, 10:30 am to 1:30 pm, $140/block of 4 classes or $35/class WATERCOLOR AND INK MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES You have probably heard it many times before; don't scrimp on the quality of your art materials. If you haven't yet painted that masterpiece, you soon will. As part of this series of watercolor classes, time will be spent on improving your drawing skills. Good drawing materials and techniques will elevate your artwork. Here are a few drawing materials I use: #5B or 6B drawing pencils Kneaded eraser Bamboo Sumi pen (small) to be used with inks Inks We will be using inks for drawing and defining value and detail in our watercolor paintings. There are two types of inks, water soluble and permanent. We will start with Sharpie pens, Marvy or Speedball calligraphy pens. You will also need a bottle of black water-soluble ink and a bottle of black waterproof ink. I will provide samples of the other materials for you to try. Afterwards, you can add to your inventory as needed. Palette The John Pike or similar For inks, small plastic cups and/or Sumi ink dishes are fine. Brushes I like to use flats for washes and rounds for detail work. I can cover large areas quickly and with more control when using flats. Good brushes hold their shape and can carry a lot of wet pigment. I use both sable and synthetic brushes. The synthetics work for me and cost much less. The brushes I use are: Flats 2-inch 1-inch 1/2-inch 1/4inch Rounds Nos. 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 rounds Specialty Brushes #6 dagger 1.5-inch or 1-inch Hake Sumi all purpose brush, #3 Rigger brush ½-inch angle shader (great for lifting) #4 fan brush (optional) Small stiff bristle scrub brush Old tooth brush Save your old used brushes, they are good for Frisket and other uses There are many good manufacturers of brushes. Princeton, Robert Simmons, Winsor & Newton, and DaVinci produce quality brushes. I use Kolinsky sables for my natural brushes. The Fritch scrub brushes work well for lifting, but oil bristle brushes serve the same purpose. Papers There are numerous brands of paper available. Fabriano and Arches are just a few of the choices. Paper comes in three textures: hot-pressed, which is very smooth; cold-pressed, which is lightly textured; and rough, which is heavily textured. Choice depends on style, subject and technique. Cold-pressed paper is good to start with. Paper also comes in various weights. I most often use 140-lb. and 300-lb. Arches Bright White. Sumi paper will also be used; Sumi-e Hosho Paper Pad, 12in x 17-1/2in, 48 Sheets will be a good paper. Paints Graham, Windsor & Newton or Daniel Smith: Reds: Rose Madder Alizarin Crimson Quinacridone Red Opera - Holbein Permanent Rose Cadmium Red Blues: Transparent Turquoise Cerulean Blue or Manganese Blue Antwerp Blue or Pthalo Blue French Ultramarine Cobalt Blue Yellows: Aureolin New Gamboge Quinacridone Gold Raw Sienna Yellow Ochre Cadmium Yellow Earths: Neutral Tint Raw Umber Burnt Umber Sepia Lamp Black Burnt Sienna Hematite Permanent White Gouache Greens: Sap Green Olive Green Pthalo Green Chromium Oxide Green Hooker's Green Other Stuff I keep a lot of odds and ends available when I paint, things I might need for convenience or to create a texture. For example: Salt and rubbing alcohol for texture (optional) Sponges Paper towels and soft tissues Painter's masking tape Two large water containers; one to wash the brush and one to rinse Liquid Frisket Small pocket knife or palette knife Medium size water spray bottle Several small water spay bottles ½-inch foam board large enough to mount ½ sheet watercolor paper (20"x24") Small 2" inch mixing dishes for mixing and pouring watercolor Small desktop easel (optional) Precut white mats of various sizes

 SCULPTURE UNVEILING - MARI'S FIRE
 DRAGONFIRE GALLERY
 March 20, 2010
 Location:  CANNON BEACH

The much anticipated unveiling of the sculpture created in memory of DragonFire co-founder Mari Rockett will take place outside DragonFire on Saturday, March 20th, the Spring Equinox at 3pm, followed by a reception. Imagine a masterfully designed and created metal sculpture that stands 10'6" high. Under the peak of a crescent moon, there is a "voyager wing" that moves with the wind. It is 3 sided and contains 2,637 square inches of 1/2" thick multi layered fused glass panels. At its center, suspended inside, is a large smoky elestial quartz "bear paw" crystal. The sculpture weighs 500 lbs. and is electrically wired for internal lighting to emphasize the beauty of the glass at night. The sculpture is an artistic collaboration between Linley Schetky and Ann Cavanaugh, using metal and glass to express Mari's love of art and shamanistic connection to both the natural and the spirit worlds. The elements of earth, air, water and fire are explored and captured in all facets of the sculpture. Within the glass are found images of spirit animals that inhabit the elemental realms and symbolize the power, grace, beauty & balance in which they exist. The steel framework holding the glass rises up to unite these elements and the spirit within us to the universal connection of all that is. The wind driven armature depicts the flow of movement between the two worlds. More details at metalandglass.blogspot.com

 Artwalk: The Painting Event
 Karin Newby Gallery
 March 26, 2010 – March 27, 2010
 Location:  K Newby Gallery

In a time of change and a world of opportunity, we are creating, innovating, always reaching… and rising to new heights TOGETHER. Join us in the K. Newby Gallery for a gathering of the top painters working today in Southwestern Art. The K. Newby Gallery is honored to showcase a group exhibit of artwork in gallery. This show extends through the end of March. The exhibit features the work of several local Tubac artists – Barbara Hill, Tom Hill, David Simons, and Nicholas Wilson. Santa Fe artists, Louisa McElwain and David DeVary, are also included in the exhibition.   “True to its name, the exhibition reflects a community of artists from diverse backgrounds working within their own points of view to become a stronger and more powerful voice together, capturing this exciting time in history.” Says Kim Roseman, owner of K. Newby Gallery. A reception for the artists will be held from 1:00 – 4:00pm on Saturday, March 26st. The reception will feature wine and cheese. Artists will be available during the reception to talk with guests and discuss their work. More information about the artists listed below: David DeVary is the first to acknowledge that his paintings are not historically accurate depictions of cowboy life in the American West in the 1900s. "In actuality, cowboys led a rough, dangerous and anything-but-glamorous existence," he says. The frontier that this artist explores draws more on the western movies of the '50s, starring matinée-idol cowboys like Roy Rogers and Gene Autry; his upbringing as a Catholic which "gave me the idea of creating modern icons of the figures we hold sacred"; and a highly successful, thirty-year career in the advertising business. Barbara Hill grew up in rural Kansas and her love of the outdoors, nature and animals carries over into her paintings, both in feeling and subject matter. She brings a breath of fresh, country air to her beautiful paintings. “My goals in painting are to portray to the viewer those special moments in an animal’s life – the time, the color and light, the feeling I have for it – then express that feeling in a creative, painterly way.” Tom Hill has traveled to over 60 countries - painting, teaching and gathering material for paintings. He has as authored six books, all about painting, color and travel. Tom has taught over 300 painting workshops, throughout the States and overseas, and has participated in group and one-man shows in leading museums and galleries, including The Honolulu Academy of Arts. The Los Angles Artists Association, The Art Institute of Chicago, The National Academy of Design, NYC, The National Cowboy Museum, Oklahoma City, The Autry National Center, Los Angeles, The Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, the Tucson Museum of Art, The National Museum of Wildlife Art, Etc. Tom was elected a life-time, honorary member of the American Watercolor Society and was elected a full academician in the National Academy of Design. Louisa McElwain has more than 20 years of painting outdoors in New Mexico behind her. She has developed the technical skill, familiarity with patterns of weather and light, and ever deepening connection with the land that allow her to plunge into the creative experience. The resulting painting leaves the viewer with a unique understanding of what it’s like when sky, clouds, wind, arroyos, and mountains fill up the senses. “It’s like dancing to the tempo of the evolving day,” she says, describing the very physical experience of painting outdoors. “A painting is like frozen choreography, like a ballet that you can see all in one moment. It’s made of marks that are gestures made through time to the rhythms of nature. Every day has a different kind of rhythm. On some days the wind is a big factor, on others its insects or heat or cold.” For years McElwain has been known for using only palette knives to apply paint, a technique that allows her to work swiftly and precisely. It was a need for haste that first gave her the idea of trading in brushes for knives. On the shore of the Chesapeake Bay many years ago, the artist was in the middle of a painting when she realized the sun was dropping quickly. She scooped some paint onto a palette knife and spread it on the canvas. She was delighted with the lushness of color and texture, not to mention the ability to capture the scene before the light was gone. David Simons was born in Ontario, Canada in 1951. In 1984 he moved to Haifa, Israel to work as a construction supervisor on major projects at the Baha‘i World Centre. It was in Israel that he began painting, at the age of 33. David is a self-taught artist. Having started as a watercolorist, he now prefers painting in oil. He is primarily a landscape artist but also enjoys still life and portrait painting.David has lived in Tubac, Arizona since 1993. His work has won acclaim in the southwestern United States and is collected internationally. David is a member of Oil Painters of America. He is also a distinguished Artist Member of the Tucson Plein Air Painters’ Society, and one of the founding members of PASSA (Plein Air Painters’ Society of Southern AZ). He is also amember of the American Impressionist Society.  Nicholas Wilson is a visionary painter and sculptor. He is widely recognized as one of the top 10 wildlife painters in America. Strong interest in nature at a young age led to Wilson's development as a nationally recognized artist today. As Curator of Exhibits at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum in the early 70's, his abilities and sensitivities were further enhanced. Wilson's artwork is in private and corporate collections across the United States. His work has been exhibited in museums in the states and abroad -- Smithsonian, National Geographic Society, London Museum of Natural History and the Scotland Museum of Natural History. He is also published in various magazines and books. Wilson is a self-taught artist and has lived in Arizona for 33 years.

 John Schuyler
 Thornwood Gallery
 March 27, 2010 – April 13, 2010
Location:  2643 Colquitt St. Houston, Texas 77098

Come join us for wine as we celebrate the artwork of artist John Schuyler on display at Thornwood Gallery. Artist will be in attendance. The exhibition will be on display until April 13th. Schuyler began experimenting with fresco techniques in the mid-to-late 1990's. As he explored the possibilities of fresco, Schuyler became absorbed in the coarseness created by different applications of the plaster to his canvas. Thus, he is able to produce very rich and dynamic textures. Looking at any of his pieces, you are given to a sudden urge to run a hand over the surface of his painting. In the words of John Schuyler, "The inspiration for my work is both selective and indiscriminate. After the initial influence sparks the beginning of a painting, the piece generally takes on a vision of it's own, a relationship develops between us and occasionally conflicts must be overcome. At other times it's very passionate and I'm in the moment, not questioning the end result, trusting it will take me where it wants to go. My work has evolved over the years and continues to undergo numerous transformations. The ultimate intention of my work is to evoke an emotional response, a strong feeling of any kind indicates passion and with that we can truly live life to its absolute fullest."

 APRIL SHOW
 Whistle Pik Galleries
 April 1, 2010 – April 30, 2010
 Location:  @APR10@

Jeff GOTTFRIED Bonnie, Karen & Rebecca LATHAM Bernard VETTER Opening Reception throughout the day Friday, April 2 First Friday Art Walk Fredericksburg An exciting event is taking place at Whistle Pik Galleries in April 2010! We will be showcasing 5 of our artists in together in our April Show. Each artist is known for their unique approach to their medium and we can't wait for the world to discover it as well. Jeff GOTTFRIED - Bronze artist Jef has said "I truly believe that art is a part of me, of the way I look at the world. Without a doubt, sculpture is my medium. When I pick up a piece of clay I feel a deep, direct connection. My challenge is to successfully combine technical accuracy, a strong message, and a powerful design into my sculptures." He has quickly become one of the artists to watch, receiving the prestigous Cowboy Artist of America Best Emerging Artist Award in 2007 and the Greely Stampede Art Show selected his work to promote their 2009 event. While not seeking awards, people are finding his work worthy of accolades and want to get the word out that he is one to add to their collections. Bonnie, Karen & Rebecca LATHAM - Water Color Miniature Artists The LATHAMS are a family of internationally known artists painting animals, birds, and nature. Karen, and her two daughters, Rebecca and Bonnie, paint primarily in finely detailed watercolor and exhibit their paintings extensively in galleries and museums around the United States and abroad. They hold memberships in numerous prestigious fine art societies around the world and have been active in fundraising and promoting the conservation of wildlife and habitat that is rendered in their work. They have been acknowledged by numerous shows and publications, including being featured in Wildlife Art Magazine in 2008. The one thing that stands out about the Latham's work is that people don't believe us when we tell them that they are water color paintings and not photographs or oil paintings. The detail work if phenomenal and the colors so vibrant...you want to reach out and touch the animal. Clients are mesmerized by their work and feel a connection with it. Bernard VETTER - Oil Painter He uses a dry brush technique to paint realistic watercolors of Southwestern and wildlife/sporting subjects, including fly-fishing scenes. In his oil paintings he specializes in Southwestern landscapes, typical of Southeastern Arizona, New Mexico and West Texas. Vetter’s paintings are a part of a number of collections including the Favell Museum in Klamath Falls, Oregon; the Pabst Collection in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and the Miller Collection in Ft. Worth, Texas as well as many private collections. In 1994 his work became part of the acquisition of the Huthsteiner Fine Arts Trust. Vetter’s work is included in the volume Contemporary Western Artist by Peggy and Harold Samuels, published by Southwestern Art.

 Be-Leaf by Kevin Box
 Thornwood Gallery
 April 17, 2010 – April 27, 2010
Location:  2643 Colquitt St. Houston, Texas 77098

In the words of Kevin Box, "We are all artists... Art is the way we express life. Some are pioneers, active in the field of creative endeavor, intentionally establishing visible connection with the invisible. As new precedents are established, we inspire new starting points for others to move from, enhancing the experience of life." In 2009, the Sante Fe based sculptor claimed that he did not want to "participate" in the recession. With that being said, Box Studio has had yet another very successful year! This success has supported the largest Box inventory ever for 2010 that will be on display at Thornwood Gallery. This successful young artist is constantly working on new concepts of already existing pieces, continuing on current editions, and of course working on completely new ideas. Kevin Box continues to be successful by creating and releasing new work that has meaning and significance to people, not just decorative or solely provocative. Simply, it just connects with people. The gallery exhibition Be-Leafs will focus on the new collection of work resulting from the Greenspoint Re-Development commission here in Houston. This new body of work celebrates the fragile nature of leaves in museum quality bronze. It is a project that he has been working on and off of for several years. His monumental sized works including the Greenspoint commission titled Blowing Leaves will be revealed in April.

 15th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
 Whistle Pik Galleries
 May 3, 2010 – May 31, 2010

Celebrating 15 years of "Graceful Discoveries" Opening Reception - Friday, May 7 in conjunction with First Friday Art Walk Fredericksburg An event that has been 15 years in the making! Whistle Pik Galleries takes this opportunity to showcase the artists that make it possible for all of the collectors to find their "Graceful Discoveries". Raising the standard in the art world, WPG prides itself in presenting art work in a comfortable, non intimidating setting so that everyone can enjoy the beautiful work that fills our galleries. Opened in 1995 by Tim and Pamela Taylor, the gallery has grown not only in size, but also in its presence in the national art scene. Representing the "cream of the crop" in artists from across the nation in traditional representational work, collectors have discovered that there truly is something different about the gallery. While selling the art is an important part of what we do, it is the relationships between the gallery, artists and clients that drive the business. It is about introducing people who walk through our doors to the art from our artists. It is about helping our artists in their careers and letting the world know of their talents and gifts they have to share. But it is the long term relationships that we develop with our artists and our clients that define us as who were are. This show is going to be a celebration of the many blessings that have happened since 1995. Please join us and be a part of it.

Artists' Reception Sunday, August 15th from 5-7pm. Again this year, Barabar Wylan will be showing acrylics on canvas with Vineyard or Cape Cod Imagery. Barbara states "sometimes it's in the most unlikey places that I discover these images. Their appeal might owe to atmospheric effects, or to reflections on water, but always contains what I see as inherent good 'design'. When the process moves to putting paint to canvas, 'design'once again asserts itself. Because I value it so highly, it now serves both as driver, and as a most important end-goal." Painter Ron Gee brings a new dimension to his landscapes and still-lifes through his concave and convex canvases. A classically trained artist, Ron Gee's newest work focuses on still lives and the moody landscape that surrounds his up island retreat. The reception, held from 5-7 pm at the Field Gallery in West Tisbury, across from Alley's General Store. It is free and open to the public.
