COMMUNITY: Jim Hastings and John Skibo
 Rising Gallery
 August 27, 2010 – October 2, 2010
 Location:  Rising Gallery

Please join us Friday August 27, 2010 from 6:00pm - 9:00pm for the opening reception of COMMUNITY featuring drawings by Jim Hastings and paintings by John Skibo. JIM HASTINGS is a local artist who has exhibited his work in a variety of venues over the past eleven years. Hastings' work explores basic human relationships - husbands and wives, children and parents, teachers and students, caregivers and the children over whom they watch - the building blocks of community. Hastings incorporates a personal lexicon of symbolism to illustrate the dynamics of people's social interactions with one another at their most instinctual base level; conveying love, violence, joy, tragedy, immaturity, and wisdom. JOHN SKIBO is a Brooklyn-based artist making his Dallas debut here at Rising Gallery. Skibo's series "Change of Context" revolves around the ways in which modern-day organization of housing affects community. When creating his paintings, Skibo reflects on the process of change within an environment, of how environment is recontextualized through building or demolishing structures and how these constant changes to landscape affect community and one's ability to interact with each other in a meaningful and sustained way. RISING Gallery is located at 4631 Insurance Lane, Dallas, Texas 75205, just North off Knox between McKinney Avenue and Highway 75. Hours: Tuesday-Friday 10am -6pm, Saturday 11am - 4pm. We are happily available before or after posted hours by appointment.

Joe MacKechnie ~ Experimenting with Drawing
 Cole Gallery
 September 1, 2010 – September 29, 2010
 Location:  @class@

WEDNESDAYS: September 1 - 29 (5 classes), 10:30 am to 1:30 pm $175.00 for all 5 classes or $35.00 per class The most important ingredient to any great artwork is the ability of an artist to draw. Developing and improving your drawing skills will help you become a better artist. To improve your drawing, art instructor and artist Joe Mac Kechnie will introduce you to experimental drawing techniques in his five classes. In theses classes you will be using graphite, charcoal, Conte, ink and pastels. Supply List: You have probably heard it many times before; don't scrimp on the quality of your art materials. If you haven't yet created that masterpiece, you soon will. If it was done with inexpensive materials, it will be noticed. Also, using inexpensive materials may lead you to believe you can never produce an art piece that looks like the pros. Becoming discouraged is less likely when you do not have to overcome poor-quality materials. Also, exchange ideas with fellow artists. Find an artist whose style you would like to emulate. Ask what equipment they use and why. What is their philosophy and approach to painting? This may influence what equipment you want to use. Drawing Materials The underlying principle to any great artwork is the artist's ability to draw. Here are a few drawing materials I use: Erasers Kneaded eraser Gum eraser Hard white eraser Pencils #4B, 5B and 6B drawing pencils Razor blade and sandpaper Charcoals Soft charcoal pencils (General's is a good brand) Soft vine charcoal sticks Soft vine charcoal bricks Soft compressed charcoal bricks (by Char-Kole) White charcoal bricks Conte Crayon Sticks Sanguine Natural Bistre (brown) White Pastels Small set of hard pastels (Nu Pastel) Small set of soft pastels (any brand) Inks Permanent Inks and Pens: " Faber-Castell PITT Calligraphy Pen, 2.0mm Chisel Nib, Sepia and/or black " Higgins Fade proof Artist Drawing Ink Brown, 1oz Bottle " Higgins Waterproof Black India Ink, 1oz Bottle Water-Soluble Inks and Pens: " Speedball Elegant Writer 4-pen Calligraphy Set " Walnut Drawing Ink, 10oz Plastic Bottle " Professional Grade Black Sumi Ink, 2oz Paper Drawing paper (Biggie Sketch pad by Canson) Drawing sketchbook Pastel paper (Canson or Fabriano, grey tone. pads or single sheet) Misc Soft paper towels Mid size Sumi or watercolor round brush Get your supplies at Cole Gallery!  New Works September 2010
 Chloe Fine Arts, LLC
 September 1, 2010 – December 31, 2010
Location:  645 Beach St., San Francisco, CA 94109

Chloe Fine Arts Gallery presents new works through the rest of the year. Curated by Greg Lejnieks, the gallery is excited to show a new collection of brilliant, colorful, breathtaking, funny, moving and thoughtful paintings and sculptures by our current group of artists. This page will be updated as new artwork is brought into the gallery.

The 2010 exhibition season was unforgettable as we examined a variety of genres from Imaginary Realism to Pop Tromp l'oeil to American Post-Impressionism to Abstraction. We also produced a number of lifestyle events: our first Art and Winemaker's Gallery Event at which we paired wine from the Buena Vista and Atlas Peak wineries with food from Chef Pelle and fine art from our group of artists and our first annual Wild Wine Country West event held in Calistoga, California where we stayed at the Solage Spa and Resort and exhibited 75 works of art in the aging caves of Clos Pegase.

The end of our 2010 exhibition season and our 2011 season will prove, we think, as stimulating as our first year program starting with our 1st Anniversary Event on December 4th, featuring our entire group of artists; a January Art and Winemaker's Gallery Dinner featuring wines from Sonoma Valley where we will produce our second Wild Wine Country West Event and Exhibition in June, 2011. In '11 we will also see new work by our current group of artists as well as the introduction of several new painters and sculptors through a number of one-person and group exhibitions.

In September the Oeno Gallery presents a stunning collection of new works by Sylvain Louis-Seize - large abstract paintings that go in a very different direction from his former exhibitions. The "Ethos" series is comprised of large panels constructed with his unusual combination of acrylic, oil, tar, liquid metal and acid, but now, abandoning his earlier use of resin, he turns his attention to the richness that lies below the surface of his earlier landscapes.

 Timothy Schmitz:
When Things Surface
(Downtown Gallery)
 Lewallen Galleries
 September 3, 2010 – September 26, 2010
 Location:  Downtown

[LONG] Timothy Schmitz's process-driven abstract paintings achieve aesthetic purity through the mastery of complex techniques. Using exotic materials, including a combination of ground marble and oil on panel, the artist produces quietly dramatic works whose richly crackled textures, glistening surfaces, and incendiary hues evoke the complementary dynamism and stillness of ancient ceramics. Informed by rigorous experimentation and the embrace of chance procedures, Schmitz's art is distinguished by its uncommon compositional harmonies and understated expressiveness.

Lighthouse Way - New York Fine Prints & Drawings Fair
 Stevens Fine Art
 September 5, 2010 – September 7, 2010
 Location:  Lighthouse Conference Center
59th St. @ Park Avenue

Stevens Fine Art is happy to be exhibiting at this new venue, a works on paper fair near Central Park, New York in November. Hope you can meet us there.
The Lighthouse Way New York Fine Prints & Drawings Fair developed when a number of fine art dealers, including several International Fine Print Dealers Association (FPDA) members, desired to have a presence in New York during "Print Week." However, prior to this year, a suitable venue on the East side was not found.
Art International/OSAT recently entered into an agreement with Lighthouse International, an organization dedicated to fighting vision loss worldwide. Their multi story building on 59th St. between Park and Lexington Ave. which is designated as "Lighthouse Way" by the city of New York houses both a theatre catering to high end events, and a Conference Center. We are happy to announce that The Lighthouse Way New York Fine Print & Drawings Fair debuts Nov. 5-7, 2010. The proceeds, in part, will benefit Lighthouse International.
Show Hours: Fri. Nov. 5 - 5p-10p Sat. Nov. 6 - 10a-7p Sun. Nov. 7 - 10a-6p For more information visit the web site: www.artinternationalfair.com

Celebrate the Life and Art of
THOM SHAW (1947 - 2010)

Opening Reception and Celebration
Wednesday, September 8, 6 - 8 pm

In 1973, Miller Gallery hosted the first-ever solo show for the then barely-known, now long-renowned, Cincinnati artist Thom Shaw who passed away July 6 after bravely battling a succession of illnesses. Best known for his gritty, hard-edged, urban-inspired and thought-provoking black and white woodcuts, Thom was the first African-American artist to have a solo show at the Cincinnati Art Museum. Despite his hard-hitting narratives and often-blistering social commentary, the energetic, passionate Thom Shaw also had a lighter side. His love of the powerful music of the jazz greats-Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis--as well as the strong rhythms of the reggae roots band Steel Pulse, inspired throughout the 1980s, a body of vibrant, geometric abstract paintings.

It is with a show of these vital and dynamic paintings from the series "Webejammin", expressive interpretations of the music he so loved, that Miller Gallery says goodbye to a great artist, a great man. Please join us in celebrating the life and work of a ground-breaking artist whose presence on the Cincinnati art scene will be sorely missed.

Behind The Velvet Rope: photographs by Chris Usher
 Rising Gallery
 September 16, 2010 – November 6, 2010
 Location:  Rising Gallery

OPENING RECEPTION, Thursday September 16, 2010 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Artist in attendance Exhibition Dates: September 16, 2010 - November 6, 2010 Please join us Thursday September 16, 2010 for the opening reception of BEHIND THE VELVET ROPE, an exhibition by award winning photographer Chris Usher. In 1998, while on assignment at the White House, Photojournalist Chris Usher began pointing the Leica he always wears around his neck away from the President of the United States to the people surrounding the President. Thus began Behind the Velvet Rope, a documentary project shot entirely with two Leica rangefinder cameras on Kodak Tri-X black and white film. His primary subjects are not, as one might expect, the President, presidential candidates and other Washington notables. Instead, Usher focuses on the men and women who work tirelessly to create, manipulate, and disseminate the essence of the Presidential persona to the public. These often unknown but vital players include the Clinton and Bush administration staffs, the Gore and Bush campaign staffs, the local media and event staff, the Secret Service, the ever-present White House Press Corps, and the constituents the presidency serves. The fifty-two images in this exhibition were selected from more than 20,000 images. The exhibition has toured across the country including a stop at the Southeast Museum of Photography in Florida. "Rising Gallery is thrilled to be the first commercial venue to exhibit this collection of photographs in its entirety," states gallery Director Karen Fedri. "The exhibit is not about being a Democrat or a Republican. It's about conveying the energy and pride of serving the country and capturing the mechanisms of our nation on an intimately human level." Chris Usher states "Since 1998, I have traveled with the President photographing the events associated with him for news magazines. Behind the Velvet Rope is a personal project to document the relatively unseen unsung groups and individuals that make public dissemination of the message of the Presidency possible. Not long after I began covering the White House, it occurred to me that it didn't matter who the President was, and I felt compelled to create images that reflected this point of view. I want my images to embrace and transport the viewer into a time and moment that feels like being there. I consider my work to be documentary and art at once." Joe Lockhart, Press Secretary to Clinton, wrote in his forward to the exhibition catalogue, "Chris Usher is a gifted story-teller who used his camera to capture emotions and events in a unique and priceless way. You'll get a real sense looking at Chris's work of just how many people, from all walks of life, it takes to run the White House. You'll see in many ways how that building reflects our great country in both its strength and diversity." The intimacy of these photographs is historically significant in that the increasing tabloidization and lack of respect for the Commander in Chief's personal affairs has escalated over time due to the demands of the 24-hour news cycle. The gentleman's agreement that previously existed between the White House and the press corps has been broken, and the access Chris enjoyed no longer exists. RISING Gallery is located at 4631 Insurance Lane, Dallas, Texas 75205, just North off Knox between McKinney Avenue and Highway 75.

Jennifer Bowman Acrylics Workshop ~ Adding Drama to your Paintings
 Cole Gallery
 September 18, 2010 – September 19, 2010
 Location:  @class@

September 18-19 10:00 -4:00 $185 (includes one pre-textured 16x20 canvas) For beginning to intermediate students, Jennifer brings joy and fun to all of her workshops. Each day will begin with a painting demonstration by Jennifer. Exploring color, value, composition and light, learn to sculpt three-dimensional elements using two-dimensional form. Students will be working on a pre-textured surface for the first day and then working in color-layering glazes and then palette knife techniques. "Acrylics are wonderful medium for fun, fast painting. It is my desire to create a positive and joyful atmosphere that nourishes the development of each artist's special talents and perceptions." Supply List Acrylic Paints: Like watercolor paints, acrylics come translucent and unlike watercolor they come in really opaque as well. The #1 colors are transparent or translucent and the #2 colors are opaque. These items are the basics you will need for the class. (The stared items are bare minimums.) Cadnium colors are not healthy for us, so I wear disposable plastic gloves at all times. 11 Quinacridone Magenta, Pink or Rose 11 Hansa or Cadnium yellow Med.* 11 Phthalo Blue (red or green shade).* 11 Titanium White (Opaque)* 11 Rich Green Gold, 12 Cad. Red Med. (Opq) Pyrrol Red (Trans.) 12 Cadmium or Pyrrol Orange Medium 12 Cadmium Red Light (If painting Poppies.) These items are my other favorite colors: 11 Indian Yellow 11 Olive Green / Forest Green / Hookers 11 Dioxazine Purple 11 Bone/ Ivory Black (Translucent) 1 Acrylic Retarder 1 Semi-Gloss / Satin Varnish to finish coat 1 Molding Paste to texture canvas Canvases: I love the pre-stretched version because I don't have time to make them. After I figured the cost and time of making one from scratch, I found it is cheaper to buy the readymade. I like the deep Gallery (1-1/2") version. You paint the sides to match your image and you don't need to frame it. Brushes: Flat: #6-16 Bright: #4-22 Acrylic paints eventually kill your brushes if you are as sloppy as me and forget to wash them out well. My old watercolor bushes that have lost their point often end up in my acrylic bucket. Synthetic brushes are great; you can use soft hog bristle brushes too. I use ¾ inch (minimum) wide brushes because I paint big, these are medium sizes I have listed here and you can choose what feels best for you. Palette Knives: I like the softer/pliable painting knives, one long 2-3" and one short 1" long-oval/soft diamond shapes are better than the diamond hard-edged shapes. I texture the canvases using a 5-year-old, 4-inch wide scrungy house painting brush or a large10 inch palette knife. Some textures are created with a roller and regular gesso. Other Tools: Plastic Gloves, Tooth brush, Pastel pieces to draw out your image on your canvas, Squirt bottle with water, Roll of Paper towels, Old dish towels to wipe wet brushes on. Boards/Easels/Pallet: Masterson's "Stay-wet palette #105" with sponge under paper is my #1 choice. Acrylics can be painted either standing up using an easel or flat on a table, it's your choice. Bring your portable easel and paint like I do, or on a table if you like. Notes: Bring a notebook and pen and some of your simple floral or landscape images that you would like to work on. When I paint, I get it EVERYWHERE, so, I dress in messy paint covered clothes. Disposable gloves are wonderful. Get your supplies at Cole Gallery! All students recieve and additional 10% off our already discounted prices!

 Ganesha's Birthday
 Andrea Smith Gallery
 September 18, 2010 – September 19, 2010
 Location:  Andrea Smith Gallery Sedona

Please come and help Andrea Smith celebrate the birthday of Ganesha, the elephant deity of the Hindu Culture. The usual ascribed birth date for Ganesha is September 11th through the 22nd, so Andrea thought we should celebrate right in the middle of this historical time. Westerners as well as the vast Indian culture have a huge fascination with the Elephant whether it is the Mythical Ganesh or the mighty, tusked giant of the Jungle. This powerful pachyderm has a charm with a great percentage of the world's population that has been going on for centuries. The Andrea Smith Gallery has focused on art of the Elephant, and that of Ganesha in particular. They have a collection of elephant rings, sculptures, paintings, earrings, and bracelets in their Ganesha collection. Smith just returned from Asia with over 100 different renditions of Ganesha and the elephant. In celebration of Ganesha's birthday, the gallery will have ruby elephants, opal elephants, sapphire, jade, and petrified wood elephants on display. The atmosphere will be like a museum dedicated to one of the largest living animals of the earth. The elephant has different aspects to its personality throughout the world. In Southeast Asia the Elephant is a powerful day laborer that moves giant logs, and makes way for construction in remote areas. In India, they are dressed with jewels, and painted, and seen as a creature of beauty. In America we think of the elephant as a circus animal, and we always have the trunk going upward for the best of luck. The belief in Ganesha is that he is the remover of obstacles, and bringer of prosperity. Hindu culture believes that Ganesh brings sustainable family wealth for many generations to come, not just in the present. Knowledge is also a primary focus of Ganesha in the Indian culture. To the Hindus, this mystic god knows no bounds, he is the channel to all of the gods. He is as universal as gravity and responds to your every need faster than the speed of light. Ganesha is remembered as the patron of culture, protector of travelers, the door opener and the guardian of destiny. Stop by the Andrea Smith Gallery on September 11th and 12th to help celebrate Ganesha's birthday, and enjoy elephant birthday cake, elephant balloons for the kids, and a wonderful collection of Ganesha art and jewelry. The Andrea Smith Gallery is prominently located at Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village in Sedona. Contact the Andrea Smith Gallery for more details: (888) 644-5444 or fineart@andreasmithgallery.com.

THE ART OF LIFE / THE LIFE OF ART: A RETROSPECTIVE
 River Bend Fine Art
 October 1, 2010 – November 4, 2010

25 years of Paintings and Drawings by Sarkis Antikajian Artist Reception and Book Signing, Friday, October 1, 5 to 9 pm Painting Demonstration Saturday, October 2 at 2 pm Sarkis Antikajian’s work derives lifelong experiences and feelings; vibrant, exciting colors are essential. Van Gogh, Bongart and Fechin influenced his color expression with inspiration for the imaginary sparked by Nolde’s little watercolors. The self-taught Willamette Valley artist considers his paintings representational but not necessarily realistic; he does not feel restricted to any subject, particular style, or medium working equally well in oils, acrylic and watercolor. Antikajian believes growth and change is important at any level in an artist’s career and says, “Our worst enemy is boredom in our work and in our way of life.”

Click on image to see examples METROPOLITANS New paintings by Will Goodyear & Annemarie Gugelmann October 1 - October 30, 2010 Opening reception for the artists Friday, October 1st 6-9 pm ESTABLISHED AND LEARNING Unlike the fields of law and medicine and architecture, the art field doesn’t usually consider advanced degrees to be necessities. But two younger, established artists whose work is opening at Adam Cave Fine Art on October 1st are pursuing this path. Believing that more formal training adds more depth and panache to their work, Will Goodyear and Annemarie Gugelmann are each at opposite ends of Masters of Fine Arts programs at top art schools. Will is just completing his MFA at the hallmark School of Art and Design at East Carolina University where he also received is BFA in 2002. The mixed media paintings that he is exhibiting in October are thematically similar to those in his Masters thesis exhibit, also scheduled for the fall. Annemarie is now in her second semester at the Rhode Island School of Design having received her BA in from Bryn Mawr College in 2007. Although neither of these North Carolina artists is from a major city, this new exhibit is loosely themed around urban architecture. Goodyear has taken a great deal of interest in the rise of Raleigh as an urban and cosmopolitan center. Gugelmann’s work reflects her travels to New York, San Francisco and Miami. Stylistically the two artists approach their subjects in very different manners; Will through layering of mixed media, Annemarie via a more direct use of the brush. Geometric architectural formation guides one’s eyes in Annemarie’s cityscapes. She employs acrylic paints on canvas for her cityscapes, treated in unusual perspectives and always abstracted in some way. Courageous colors, often suggesting stage settings, many times in silhouette, surprise the viewer. In addition to her acrylic paintings she is an accomplished printmaker and some of her recent monotypes are included in the show. The subjects and objects in Will’s paintings are buried under layers of translucent paint, then selectively revealed. His medium is a complex combination of screen prints, oil paint and bee’s wax on wood panels. Buildings, sometimes-identifiable Raleigh landmarks, peek thru his abstracted backgrounds. In other paintings, he has selected major monuments, and occasionally people, as his subjects. Both artists have received accolades for their work since bursting on the art scene. Annemarie won an emerging artist grant from the Durham Art Guild to create a series of giant canvases, portraits of the city of Durham. Will received second place in the 2008 Works of Heart charity art auction. Will Goodyear and Annemarie Gugelmann are represented by Adam Cave Fine Art, 115-1/2 East Hargett Street, in Raleigh, NC.

Paul is a graduate of Arizona State University and a former fellow at the prestigious Gannett Center for Media Studies at Columbia University in New York City. He taught magazine writing at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, and was Executive Editor at American Health magazine, a winner of the National Magazine Awards for General Excellence. Since becoming a full-time writer, Paul has written or co-written more than books on a variety of subjects, from the paranormal to piracy. In 1986 his interest in the effects and meaning of near-death experiences led him to a professional involvement with Dr. Raymond Moody, considered to be the founder of near-death studies. The two have written three books together (The Light Beyond, Coming Back and Reunions). Between Two Worlds: How Shared Death Experiences Provide a Glimpse Into Eternity is the ninth book he has co-written on the fascinating subject of Near-Death Experiences and the fourth with Dr. Moody.

 Magical Egypt Tour
 Andrea Smith Gallery
 February 5, 2011 – February 11, 2011
 Location:  Egypt

Egypt has long held a fascination for travelers, and has been a tourist destination for a couple of thousand years. Roman statesman Marc Antony was drawn there by Cleopatra, Napoleon campaigned there during the late nineteenth century, and now modern tourists find themselves traveling there to see some of the greatest human monuments in the pyramids, the Sphinx, innumerable temples, as well as the life giving Nile River. Now you can travel there with the Sedona Chamber of Commerce and hosts Andrea and Gary Smith of Andrea Smith Gallery of Sedona. The Smith's have been escorting groups to Egypt since 1994. February 5 - 11, 2011 marks the dates of travel for a group of 15 or more. For those intent on capturing the deepest experience that Egypt can offer, there is an additional tour from February 11 - 15 that offers a luxury cruise on the Nile River to visit Aswan [Nubia], Thebes[Luxor], the Valley of Kings, and Karnak, the largest temple complex in Egypt. Given the small size of the groups assembling for this trip, you will experience Egyptian culture and history as larger groups can never do. Day One is your travel day to Cairo. Day Two gets you to the city and you settle in at the 5 star, Le Meridien Pyramids Hotel and meet your guide. Day Three includes a private tour of the Egyptian Museum to view such exhibits as the treasure trove of Tut-Ankh-Amon and more [you will avoid 3,000 children and 7,000 adults]. Your fourth Day in-country brings a tour of Old Cairo's Islamic, Jewish and Christian neighborhoods, followed on Day Five with a sunrise visit to the Giza plateau to see the Great Pyramid and Sphinx. A visit to the Khan El Khalili Bazaar on Day Six is next and departure to home is on Day Seven . Price is $2980 per person, based on double occupancy. This includes lodging, some meals, and sight seeing with a private Egyptologist as your guide. We have secured group travel pricing from British Air to go from Phoenix to Cairo via London. This is the most direct flight, with a short lay over in London. All of the tipping for your Cairo journey is taken care of. You do not have to tip your guide, or driver, nor do you have to tip for luggage handling. If you want to get an even greater appreciation for the country and its past, you can extend your tour beyond the original dates to experience a Nile Cruise offered from February 11 to 15, 2011. After the previously noted tour, you fly to Aswan where you will board your Luxury cruise ship and delve into the Philae Isis Temple. The second day of this excursion brings you to Kom Ombo and the Edfu Temple. Day Three provides a visit to Thebes and the Valley of the Kings, while Day Five finds you at Karnak. This stunning cruise on the Nile River to visit sites of remarkable antiquity and stunning beauty should not be missed. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are included on your cruise. The cuisine is outstanding, with the freshest of fruits and vegetables from the Nile farmers. There is always something for everyone's palette. Price for this extension to the original tour is $1,150 per person, double occupancy in addition to the base price noted above.this includes air fare to Aswan, and three wonderful meals daily. If this tour and its extension of the Nile Cruise tugs at your spirit of adventure, click on the links below to find all the details. Interested parties should contact Gary Smith at the Andrea Smith Gallery, 928-203-9002 or asfaltd@ol.com, Thursday through Sunday.
